    August 2019 Book Haul

I have been heavily utilizing the library this year, which has been great for my wallet, but Barnes and Noble finally had a sale, and I went crazy. Truthfully, this is only the first part of my haul since I also ordered about seven books online, but these are the ones I picked up in-store. I didn’t mean to pick out a specific set of books, but I think I was subconsciously drawn to historical fiction. I took advantage of the buy two, get the third free deal and 30 percent off deals. Let’s get started! Image from Amazon 1. The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed…

    2019 TBR List

Time to set some reading intentions for 2019! I’ve already started this year off strong by finishing two books in the first 14 days (that’s a big deal for me believe it or not), and I’m hoping to keep the momentum going through the next 11 months. I’ve compiled this list of books that are high on my reading list, but I know I’ll probably add a ton more before the year is up. Keep in mind this list is highly aspirational. I’ve listed 24 books in this post, and it’s not likely I’ll actually read every book on this list, but I’m going to try. Since I’m already listing out so…

Salt to the Sea: A Book Review

Over 9,000 innocent lives lost. Over 9,000 lives that ended too soon. Over 9,000 people who didn’t get to continue their story. And I only knew about it because of a book. I was never taught about it in any classes, but the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff was one of the largest civilian casualties in World War II, and I didn’t learn about it until I picked up a book from a local bookstore. Told from four different perspectives, Salt to the Sea combines the unique journies of Joana, Florian, Emilia, and Alfred as they attempt to escape dangerous lands during World War II. Each character brings their own baggage to…

    “Room”: A Review

Title: Room Author: Emma Donoghue Genre: Novel Quotation: “Scared is what you’re feeling. Brave is what you’re doing.”   Would recommend to: anyone who needs to be inspired. Jack only knows of the room. He only knows the four walls that keep him inside, the handful of possessions him and his mother own, and the man, Old Nick, that visits at night, which relegates him to sleeping in Wardrobe. The room and what it contains are all that Jack knows because he was born in Room. Jack refers to everything in Room as a proper noun, because they are more than just things to him, they are friends. Because his mom, Ma, was abducted…

    Code Name Verity: A Review

Title: Code Name Verity Author: Elizabeth Wein Genre: Young Adult Historical Fiction Quotation: “It’s like being in love, discovering your best friend.” Would recommend to: any history fan that loves a good twist. The title, much like the book, is allusive in nature but focuses on the book much more than readers will originally believe. Code Name Verity, written by Elizabeth Wein, is an intricate story about relationships between people that evolves around codes, names, and “Verity,” known by many names, but I shall call her Queenie. The title, much like the novel, is something readers won’t fully understand unless they give it a second read. All aspects of this novel are doubled-sided —…
